About us

Two sisters, two disciplines. Medicine and engineering, working together on the places people live, work, learn and stay.

Background

Circadian Environments was founded by two sisters with a shared mission, and began with a conversation that kept coming back to the same question from opposite directions. One of us is a physician, trained to ask how strong the evidence really is. The other trained in civil engineering and green building assessment, and asks what the building and the instruments actually show.

Healthy-building advice tends to come from one side or the other: health claims without measurement, or building standards without a clear line to health. We started Circadian Environments to bring the two together, and to give people advice that is both scientifically sound and technically right.

Our mission

To make the places people live, work and stay measurably healthier, using the best available evidence.

How we work

  1. Measure first

Every recommendation starts with readings from the space itself, not a general checklist.

  2. Grade the evidence honestly

We tell you what is well supported, what is reasonable, and what is not supported, and link to our sources.

  3. Practical over perfect

Changes are ranked by likely benefit, cost and effort, so you can act on what matters most.

Our team

Founded by two sisters. Growing with people who share the mission.

Emily and SJ started Circadian Environments with the same aim, coming at it from different directions: to make the places people live, work and stay measurably healthier. That work is now bigger than the two of us, and our team is growing.

We are building a network of collaborators across Australia and Europe who share our standards for evidence and measurement. Emily travels to Italy every year and has an established network of scientists and physicians there, and Italian approaches to wellbeing and the built environment have shaped our philosophy. We work from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

We also collaborate with established architects, designers, builders and specialists who want health designed into their projects. If that sounds like you, we would like to hear from you.

Why “circadian”

Circadian rhythms are the roughly 24-hour cycles that govern sleep, alertness, hormones and much else. Light is their strongest external cue, and for many of us, much of the light we get each day is the light inside buildings.

The name is a reminder of how we think about a space: as a set of conditions that change across the day. This site does the same. It follows your local time.
